fly stone, fly

dust kunkel

Dust is a Third Culture Kid (TCK) who grew up in Ghana, West Africa.  With a mother from Montana and a father from Oregon, he returned at age seventeen to the Pacific Northwest and has taught literature, guided the Salmon River in Idaho, foster-parented teens, managed outdoor schools, and directed student leadership programs at a university.  Dust has a BA in Literature, an MSc in Outdoor Education from the University of Edinburgh, Scotland, a PCC from the International Coach Federation, and has published two books of poems (Humming: A Field Guide, 2019, and Ferry Bowing, and Other Poems, 2009).

Dust and his wife, Jan, live in Oregon City, Oregon, at the end of the Oregon Trail and have two daughters launched from the nest, and two elderly retriever-mix dogs, Bowie and Percy, who will not launch from any nest.

When he’s not coaching non-profit executives and writing or performing live music, Dust is working with friends in Ghana to build a school, running Northwest rivers with friends, fly-fishing, and reading. Of course.

“If Faulkner wrote fantasy, he’d have written something like this… unique, lyrical, and steeped in Americana folklife.”

Who wants a knock-off novel culled from the internet by an algorithm? Not me.

I believe readers are looking for certified-human, zero-A.I. literary fiction that thrills, horrifies, brings catharsis and captures beauty. If that’s you, we’re a great match.

I’m committed to writing something real and as human-created as possible. The only algorithm is the rhythm in my head. I don’t use A.I. for anything. My writing takes time, effort, and real energy. I think of you often as I write. Writers are nothing without readers.

I hope you find Fly Stone, Fly enjoyable, but also rewarding. A book that you return to over and over. One that gets better every time you read it. That’s the kind of book I like to read.
